What's in a Name?

Location

2299 Mountain Drive, Abbotsford, BC

Opened

1992

The School

Mountain Elementary was opened in 1992. One of the first administrators, Don Marten, had to deal with the air quality problems that plagued the school from the beginning. When children and staff began complaining of breathing problems, an investigation was conducted. A construction problem involving air ducts was identified. The problem was graphically demonstrated by using a bee-keeping smoker to puff smoke into an outlet return pipe in the ceiling.  The smoke, instead of being sucked out, was being blown back into the room.  The school had to be closed for six months while a contractor fixed the problem.

Origin of the Name

Often a school is named after the street where it is located. This is the case for Mountain Elementary which is located on Mountain Drive in Abbotsford. This school is nestled in picturesque Mountain Village on Sumas Mountain.

The Abbotsford School District graciously acknowledges the Abbotsford Retired Teachers Association for collecting the histories and stories of our schools as part of their "What's in a name?" 50th-anniversary project.
