School Safety

Parking Lot:

We understand that our lot is crowded and chaotic.  Following the steps below will alleviate some of the safety concerns.  The drop-off lane nearest the school is set up as a drop-and-go. We need people to drop children off at the farthest point in the lane and then keep going. The left lane is for through traffic, no stopping allowed. When cars stop at the "island" in the middle, it backs traffic up or forces others to pull out and around to pass. This is a huge safety concern. To keep it safer for all, please follow these steps:

1. IF YOU PLAN ON STAYING: PARK AT THE FAR END OF THE LOT, SPACE PERMITTING.

2. FOR DROP-AND-GOs: PULL AHEAD IN THE DROP-OFF LANE ON THE RIGHT AS FAR AS POSSIBLE BEFORE LETTING CHILDREN OUT OF CAR.

3. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR VEHICLE UNATTENDED IN THE DROP-OFF LANE.

4. PLEASE USE CROSSWALKS AT ALL TIMES. WE ARE ROLE MODELS FOR THE CHILDREN.

Guests:

Mountain Elementary is a closed campus.  The purpose of this policy is to regulate access by any person or organization to students in District No. 34 (Abbotsford), and to avoid interruptions of school programs.  Lunches can be dropped off at the office and students will be called down at the appropriate time.  All visitors including parents/guardians/caregivers must report to the office and do a health-check using the QR code posted on the front door.

Closure of Schools for Extreme Weather:

On occasion, it is necessary to temporarily close a school when weather conditions might endanger the health and safety of students. The Superintendent of Schools has authority on behalf of the Board, to temporarily close a school.

If parents believe the local conditions are unsafe, they should keep their child at home or arrange his/her early dismissal.

The School District has an automated phone service that calls everyone's house in the event of urgent information and emergency news that need to get to parents.

You will receive an automated phone call if school is cancelled.   Families can also check for updates the School District website at www.sd34.bc.ca

Announcements will be made on the local radio stations, STAR FM 98.3, Country 107.1 FM, Punjabi Radio 1550 AM or most local news TV stations.

Absences/Lates:

Parents are asked to call the school (604-852-7299) each time your child is absent or late to school.  Feel free to leave a message on the voicemail.  Also, students must go straight to their classroom if they arrive at school late.  If parents do not call the school, you will be contacted to ensure the child is safe. Also, if a child is being picked up early, parents/guardians must pick up their child at the classroom door and sign them out with the teacher.
