Diwali Celebrations Across #AbbySchools

November 20, 2023

Across the Abbotsford School District, vibrant celebrations were underway last week to embrace the spirit of Diwali, a significant festival in South Asian cultures that symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.

This year, students and staff took the opportunity to learn more about the cultural importance of this festival and celebrate the diversity of our schools.

From the youngest learners to our senior students, the spirit of Diwali has touched every corner of our district. Hallways were transformed with vivid and colourful artwork. Classrooms turned into dynamic centers of learning, where students engaged in various activities exploring food, traditions and history of the event. Assemblies provided a stage for sharing dancing, music and much more.

At W.A. Fraser Middle school, student-led initiatives were at the heart of the Diwali celebrations. Henna stations, managed by enthusiastic students, raised funds for the Abbotsford Food Bank. This generosity was mirrored in the students' efforts to decorate bulletin boards, capturing the essence of Diwali's message. Immersed in painting Diyas, the students' joy and connection with the festival's theme of light was evident. The school's Commons Crew deserves recognition for their superb organization of a school-wide door decorating contest, fostering creativity and community spirit. Moreover, a successful Samosa fundraiser, led by the school's dedicated band students, highlighted the values of sharing and kindness, which are integral to the spirit of Diwali.

What is Diwali?
Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is a major Hindu festival celebrated widely across India and in many parts of the world. It is often referred to as the "Festival of Lights" and symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. Diwali is a time for renewal and rejoicing, celebrated with family gatherings, vibrant decorations, lighting lamps and candles, setting off fireworks, sharing sweets, and various cultural events.

Wishing you all a happy, healthy and safe Diwali!
