Highlights - Board Meeting - Feb. 11, 2020

The Abbotsford Board of Education regularly meets throughout the school year. All meetings are open to the public and livestreamed. Agendas and minutes from the public Board Meetings can be accessed through the District's Electronic School Board. Below is a summary of highlights from the meeting.

Student Presentation

Abbotsford Middle – International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program

Students from Abbotsford Middle School spoke with Trustees about their experience in the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (MYP). The IB MYP provides a framework of academic challenge, life skills, and social responsibility for students. The program spans the three years of middle school - grades 6, 7 and 8 - and can help prepare students for high school by providing a framework of learning which encourages students to become creative, critical and reflective thinkers.

Report on Achievement/Results

Communications – Progress Report from 2018-19          

A key objective of the Abbotsford School District Strategic Plan includes a focus on improving internal communications and increasing parent and community engagement through a variety of strategies. Kayla Stuckart, Communications Manager, provided a progress report to the Board on district Communication achievements.

Secondary – Progress Report from 2018-19        

Assistant Superintendent Gino Bondi provided a progress report to the Board which highlighted key achievements, innovative projects, early signs of success, and challenges related to increasing student success and enhancing leadership excellence in the context of our secondary schools.

Local School Calendar for 2020-2021 - Notice of Intent 

Superintendent Kevin Godden recommended that the Board of Education serve Notice of Intent that the 2020-2021 Local School Calendar will be presented for debate and vote at a regular meeting of the Board on March 10, 2020.

Strategic Plan Refresh  

As the 2016-2020 Strategic Plan comes to an end, the Board of Education will enter into a new round of public consultations to gather feedback to update the Board’s strategic plan. Superintendent Kevin Godden provided a brief overview of this consultation process, to ensure both internal and external consultation will be completed to properly align the processes with the budget cycle.

Amended Annual Budget Bylaw 2019-2020        

Section 113 (1) of the School Act, requires that a board, by bylaw, (a) must adopt an annual budget on or before June 30 of each year for the next fiscal year, and (b) may amend the annual budget adopted underparagraph (a). Secretary-Treasurer Ray Velestuk recommended that the Board of Education approve all three readings of the 2019/2020 Amended Annual Budget Bylaw.

Transportation Review 

Secretary-Treasurer Ray Velestuk provided the Board of Education with an update on discussion from the second public meeting regarding the student transportation review on January 27, 2020. The main issues facing the district’s student transportation services relate to financial constraints as well as increasing expectations from the community.

King Traditional Elementary: Air Quality Update             

The Board of Education was last updated on the air quality concerns at King Traditional Elementary School at the December 3, 2019 Public Board Meeting. Secretary-Treasurer Ray Velestuk provided Trustees with a futher update on air quality at the school.
